Cambridge Upper Secondary (IGCSE)

14 to 16 years old*

The Cambridge IGCSE curriculum offers a variety of routes for learners with a wide range of abilities, including those whose first language is not English.

Cambridge helps schools build a curriculum around their specific needs. Starting from a foundation of core subjects, it is easy to add breadth and cross-curricular perspectives. Encouraging learners to engage with a variety of subjects, and make connections between them, is fundamental to our approach.

For schools, Cambridge IGCSE offers a flexible and stimulating curriculum, supported with excellent resources and training.

For learners, Cambridge IGCSE helps improve performance by developing skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem-solving. It is the perfect springboard to advanced study.

Cambridge ICE Curriculum

Cambridge ICE is a group award for Cambridge IGCSE, and is very popular in the USA and South America.

It allows schools to offer a broad and balanced curriculum by recognising the achievements of learners who pass examinations in at least seven Cambridge IGCSE subjects from five different subject groups, including two different languages.

The Cambridge IGCSE subjects are grouped into five curriculum areas:

• Group I: Languages
• Group II: Humanities and Social Sciences
• Group III: Sciences
• Group IV: Mathematics
• Group V: Creative and Professional

Learners must take two different languages from Group I, and one subject from each of Groups II, III, IV and V. The seventh subject can be taken from any of the five subject groups.

Cambridge Advanced (AS & A Level)

16 to 19 years old*

Cambridge helps schools to build a Cambridge Advanced curriculum that brings success for learners. The syllabuses prepare learners for university study, which is why universities worldwide value and recognise Cambridge International AS & A Level qualifications.

Cambridge International AS & A Level Curriculum

Cambridge International AS & A Level Curriculum develops learners’ knowledge, understanding and skills in:

• In-depth subject content

• Applying knowledge and understanding to new as well as familiar situations
• Handling and evaluating different types of information source
• Thinking logically and presenting ordered and coherent arguments
• Making judgements, recommendations and decisions

Cambridge offers a choice of 55 subjects and schools can offer them in almost any combination. This flexibility means schools can build an individualised curriculum, and learners can choose to specialise in a particular subject area or study a range of subjects.

Cambridge International A Level is typically a two-year course, and Cambridge International AS Level is typically one year. Some subjects can be started as a Cambridge International AS Level and extended to a Cambridge International A Level.

Cambridge AICE Diploma Curriculum

The Cambridge AICE Diploma is made up of individual Cambridge International AS & A Levels, which have widespread international standing as educational qualifications.

By demanding knowledge from three different subject groups, plus the core compulsory subject, Cambridge International AS Level Global Perspectives & Research, the Cambridge AICE Diploma provides a broad curriculum with a balance of maths and science, languages, arts and humanities, and interdisciplinary subjects. It maintains flexibility and choice by allowing students to choose subjects at different levels.

Junior High School (BECE)

Galaxy International School admits students for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSE), as well as IGCSE students. Galaxy students have been writing these exams for over five years.

The BECE is the examination conducted for Junior High School students who spend three years in school, after their six-year primary school education. The BECE is conducted by the West African Examinations Council for the Ghana Education Service.

It is held in June every year and successful candidates gain admission into the Senior High School.

Senior High School (WASSCE)

Galaxy International School admits students for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSE), as well as IGCSE students. Galaxy students have been writing these exams for over five years.

The WASSCE is conducted for students who complete a three-year programme at the Senior High School. The examination embraces candidates in all the English-speaking West African countries – Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia and, recently, Liberia.

Successful candidates gain admission into universities and other tertiary institutions. The WASSCE is accepted throughout the world for admission into universities.
