🏅✨ David Afflu Shines at Eskom International Science Fair
We are elated to celebrate once again the remarkable achievement of one of our outstanding students, David Afflu, who recently participated in the South Africa Eskom International Science Fair and emerged as a gold medalist, securing the top position in the Computer Science category.
The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF) is a prestigious platform where students showcase their scientific research and discoveries. This event, held annually in Boksburg, South Africa, brings together talented young minds from 35 Expo Regions within the country and across the globe.
David, a Year 13 student, has consistently demonstrated his passion for mathematics and scientific exploration. His journey to success began in August 2023 when he qualified for the MISE Foundation’s Summer Research Camp. This camp, led by PhD students from around the world, delves into areas of computer science, data analysis, and research. During the camp, David embarked on a project exploring the application of Machine Learning to create a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), allowing users to control a simple Pong game using their minds.
Building on the knowledge gained from the camp, David took his project to the Eskom ISF. His project addressed the challenges of processing brain signals, highlighted the role of Machine Learning in BCI development, and served as an assistive technology for disabled individuals, offering accessible entertainment.
In recognition of his exceptional performance at the expo, David was awarded a well-deserved gold medal and was honoured as the winner in the computer science category. This achievement reflects David’s dedication and innovative thinking and underscores the strength of our school’s commitment to nurturing and empowering students in science and technology.
